Meet the Minds: Mary Dell Hayes
If you’ve spent any time in South Carolina’s nonprofit sector over the last two decades, chances are good you’ve crossed paths with Mary Dell Hayes. Maybe it was during her time as Executive Director of Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands. Maybe it was through her thoughtful consulting work with Together SC or other nonprofits in the state. Or maybe, like us, you’ve had the pleasure of working with her — rolling up sleeves, thinking big, and getting the job done.
Mary Dell is the founder and owner of StopGap Solutions, a consulting firm that partners with organizations to navigate transitions, tackle thorny challenges, and lead with strategy. At 1000 Feathers, we like to say that our best partners are the ones who understand that transformation doesn’t come from producing widgets but from creating the conditions for meaningful change. That’s Mary Dell, through and through.
We're currently working alongside her on a statewide compensation study for Smart Start — a network of 75 local partnerships that are committed to advancing a high quality, comprehensive, accountable early childhood system than benefits each child in North Carolina beginning with a healthy birth. It’s a complex, multi-layered initiative that demands more than just numbers and benchmarks; it requires deep listening, nuanced understanding, and a willingness to go beyond the surface. Luckily, Mary Dell’s been here before. She led a similar effort for Together SC, helping nonprofits across the Palmetto State better understand and advocate for fair and competitive compensation practices.
When we asked Mary Dell what makes a partnership with 1000 Feathers work, her answer was simple: “shared values, mutual respect, and a drive to help communities move from Point A to Point B.” She appreciates clients who aren’t afraid to take smart risks or let go of overly rigid processes. It’s about making thoughtful investments and being open to what’s possible — and having some fun along the way.
Away from work, Mary Dell is full of delightful surprises. She’s currently on a years-long journey to read a biography of every U.S. president (she’s on FDR now — send snacks). She’s also on a mission with her family to visit all 50 states before turning 50, which we think is a pretty fantastic way to celebrate that milestone.
When she’s not reading, traveling, or knee-deep in strategy sessions, you might find her recommending The Four Disciplines of Execution, a book she never tires of, or using her go-to emoji — the laughing-crying face — to add a little humor to any message.
