When Vision Becomes Reality: Celebrating the Opening of a New Resource Center

Sometimes the most important milestones begin with a series of “what if” questions.

What if we could do things a little differently?

What if services were easier to access and barriers were reduced?

What if the community actually worked together to solve challenges?

Over time, organizations that are focused on being strategic, innovative, and resourceful will find themselves in positions to take on these types of questions with strategic thinking, collaboration, investment, visioning, and hard work.

Resource Center Opens Its Doors

Last week, the 1000 Feathers team had the opportunity to participate in an event that reflected the culmination of this type of approach: the opening of Union Mission's new Emmaus House Resource Center in downtown Savannah. More than a building, the Resource Center is the result of years of thoughtful planning, community partnership, and a willingness to imagine a different approach to serving those experiencing homelessness.

Designed as a one-stop hub for those in need to access care, the Resource Center brings together meals, healthcare, housing navigation, workforce development, hygiene services, and other critical resources under one roof. By creating a more coordinated experience for clients and providers, Union Mission is helping remove barriers that often make it difficult for people to access the support they need. The new facility is expected to serve up to 200 individuals each day.

We have been honored to walk alongside Union Mission during a period of tremendous growth and transformation that includes acquiring Emmaus House but also many other significant organizational advancements in the areas of property, people, and programs. Through strategic planning, leadership development, and ongoing conversations about the future of the organization, we have witnessed firsthand the commitment of their team, board, and community partners to think beyond immediate needs and build for long-term impact.

Our relationship with Union Mission began with the completion of a strategic plan but the intent was never for that to be the end of our work together. One of the key priorities that emerged from Union Mission's strategic plan was a commitment to collaborate and engage more deeply with community partners. We have been working with the organization for an extended period of time now and the Resource Center is a powerful example of what can happen when an organization level  commitment to a key strategy moves from paper to practice. Rather than asking individuals to navigate a fragmented system on their own, Union Mission has created a model that brings partners together around a shared goal: helping people move from crisis to stability.

To learn more about this milestone, we asked Union Mission President & CEO Mike Traynor to reflect on the journey.

Q&A with Mike Traynor

Q: You just cut the ribbon on the new Resource Center, which has been a couple years in the making. Tell us why this matters for the community, right now.

A: Our community is making significant progress in reducing unsheltered homelessness, but there is much more to do. The Emmaus House Resource Center takes a web of tangled services spread across the community and places them in one location, providing a pathway for solutions. It has always been difficult to tell a homeless person to go across town to get needed services as most struggle with transportation and other obstacles. We, instead, want to tell them to go down the hall. The model is built on collaboration and engagement with partners. We focus on what we do well while our partners focus on what they do well.

Q: In your remarks, we heard you mention your strategic plan. How did your strategic plan lead you to this decision, and ultimately, this new endeavor?

A: Our strategic plan played a critical role in our decision to open the center. With the help of 1000 Feathers, we settled on three Big Bets: Take Care of Home, Collaborate and Engage, and Disciplined and Focused Growth. These Big Bets are part of everything we do in providing facilities with dignity for our clients, building partnerships that help address the myriads of issues impacting the homeless, and focusing on strategic gaps in service delivery.

We go back to two important phrases pretty consistently - "we might be serving the homeless, but we don't want to look homeless" and "if there is no margin, there is no mission." This framing has allowed us to expand and update our footprint with a number of new, modern facilities. More importantly, our focus on the Big Bets has led to four-fold increase in clients served on an annual basis since 2021 and all while maintaining financial discipline with rapid growth.

Q: We have been so honored at 1000 Feathers to work alongside Union Mission over the last few years. Could you share one quick thought with our readers on what it's been like to work with us?

A: 1000 Feathers is our strategic partner and our sounding board as we consider critical initiatives.  The partnership started with a strategic plan, but it continues almost four years later with strength and great respect. We truly believe we would not be experiencing the success we are having partnering with people to end their homelessness if we had not gone through the process and discovery needed to implement focused strategies. We look forward to continuing this relationship for years to come.

The Power of Looking Ahead

In the nonprofit sector, it's easy to become consumed by the urgency of today's challenges. The needs are immediate. The demands are constant. The work never stops.

Yet the organizations creating lasting change are often the ones willing to pause long enough to ask bigger questions about the future. That is exactly what Union Mission has done and what they continue to do.

The Resource Center is a reminder that strategic planning is not simply about producing a document. At its best, strategic planning creates clarity. It helps organizations identify where they want to go, align resources around a shared vision, and make intentional decisions that move them closer to that future.

For Union Mission, that future now has an address: Emmaus House Resource Center @ 127 Fahm Street.

We couldn't be more excited for Mike, the Union Mission team, their board, and the many community partners and donors who helped make the Resource Center possible. More importantly, we are excited for the individuals and families who will walk through its doors and find not only services, but hope, dignity, and a pathway toward stability.

Congratulations, Union Mission. This is a milestone worth celebrating.
